How to disclose AI dubbing to your viewers

Whether and how you need to label an AI-dubbed video depends on where you're publishing, what the content is, and the jurisdiction you and your audience are in. The rules are evolving and they're not ours to set — this article just points you at where to look so you can decide what fits your situation.

General orientation only, not legal advice. For specific cases, talk to a qualified lawyer.

Where disclosure rules come from

Three layers, usually:

  • The platform you publish on. YouTube, Meta, TikTok and others have their own labels and toggles for "altered" or "synthetic" content. Check the platform's current creator policy before publishing.

  • The law where you and your audience are. The EU AI Act sets rules around synthetic media disclosure, and several countries have their own. Truth-in-advertising and broadcasting laws can also apply.

  • Industry-specific rules. Political ads, financial promotions, regulated health content, and similar categories often have stricter standards on top.

We don't try to spell out which of these apply to a given video — that depends on factors only you know. Please check the policies of the platforms you publish on and the regulations in the markets you're targeting.

A safe default if you're unsure

A short disclosure does no harm and tends to cover you across most regimes. A brief on-screen note, or a line in the video description saying that the audio has been translated and voiced with AI, is usually enough. Many viewers actively appreciate the transparency.

Independent of any local disclosure law: if you use Dubly.AI to clone someone else's voice (an employee, partner, actor, contributor, etc.), our Acceptable Use Policy requires written consent from that person before the clone is created.

This is a Dubly.AI policy and applies regardless of how (or whether) you choose to label the final video for your viewers.
